American-style pad mounted transformers primarily consist of two parts: the front part includes high and low voltage operation compartments, which also encompass the handles for load switches, high and low voltage terminals, tap changer switches, and plug-in fuse operation handles, as well as pressure valves, oil temperature gauges, oil level indicators, oil filling ports, drain valves, and more. The rear part includes an oil immersed enclosure, radiators, transformer windings, iron core, high-voltage load switch, and protective fuses, all placed within an oil storage tank. The enclosure utilizes concealed high-strength bolts and oil-resistant rubber gaskets for sealing the box cover. It is a fully enclosed structure capable of withstanding an approximate gauge pressure of 0.5 kg/cm2. The design of the enclosure takes into consideration drainage, safety, and ease of operation requirements, and only the low-voltage compartment can be accessed before the high-voltage compartment is opened.
American-style pad mounted transformers use a Δ/Y○ connection scheme. Because zero-sequence and third-harmonic currents circulate within the closed loop of the high-voltage winding, the total zero-sequence and third-harmonic magnetic potential on each iron core column is almost zero. Therefore, the neutral point potential of the low-voltage side does not shift, ensuring high-quality phase voltages. Similarly, as lightning currents can also flow within the closed loop of the high-voltage winding, the total magnetic potential for lightning currents on each iron core column is almost zero, eliminating overvoltages in both forward and backward transformations and ensuring good lightning protection performance.
